I feel kind of scared about going to Uruguay, and kind of excited. I'm a little scared of going so far away from home. I'll miss our housemate Johnny, and I'll miss Lickorice, too, and our friends. I'm excited about new experiences like surfing, eating new foods, learning Spanish, and working on a farm.

A Long, Long Journey

Going to Uruguay is a big change for me! I have never been that far away from home. Montevideo is 5,079 miles from Atlanta! I am looking forward to many new things. I am going to learn Spanish and be bilingual. I am going to meet new friends and have fun playing at the beach. Teo, Mom, and I are going to be going to new places in Montevideo. We will tell you all about it.

Forty-eight hours from now, if all goes as planned, my kids and I will be somewhere over the Caribbean, winging our way south. Our destination is Montevideo, the capital of the South American country of Uruguay. This trip is one I've dreamed of for many years, and I am filled with anticipation and excitement, and, as is appropriate for any adventure, a bit of apprehension as well.
Many have asked about our plans, so here they are in a nutshell. For the first three weeks, Teo, Javy, and I will be studying Spanish for three hours a day at a Spanish school in Montevideo and living with a host family close to the school. Gene will arrive on December 23, in time to enjoy Christmas Eve celebrations with us. Luke arrives on Christmas afternoon, and the next day, the five of us will set off to explore the country. We'll enjoy a few days at the beach at Punta del Diablo near the Brazilian border, and then a few days at an estancia, kind of like a ranch, in the northeast part of the country. On the way back to the capital from there, we'll spend one night in the city of Treinta y Tres, and a day hiking and birdwatching in the nearby national park. After Luke leaves us on January 4, Gene, Teo and Javy and I will volunteer for two weeks on an organic farm, and get to know what life in a small Uruguayan village is like. We'll be back in Montevideo for the last two weeks of January. Gene will start work, and the boys and I will explore the city's parks, visit its museums, stroll along the Rambla, and practice, practice, practice our Spanish. In early February, we'll move to a house in Atlántida, a town on the beach about 45 km outside the city, where we'll live until the end of June!
After months of planning and weeks of packing, it's hard to believe that we'll be leaving so soon. It started to seem real on Tuesday night, when we had our last meal together with our housemate, before he left for the Thanksgiving holiday. It will be seven months until Teo, Javy, and I see him again, and the boys will miss him very much. Yesterday we shared a wonderful last afternoon and evening with many other friends. Thanks to Karen G. for the pictures from our "Hasta Luego" open house. We were honored that so many of our friends were able to come for a last swing on the tire swing, a final conversation over snacks and around a bonfire, and farewell hugs.
We said more goodbyes tonight after sharing a lovely Thanksgiving dinner with home schooling friends. So much to be thankful for tonight, so much to look forward to in the coming months!
